Strategic partnership to generate BlueEnergy in the Life HyReward Project!

The Life HyReward RED pilot plant has arrived in Alicante, Spain. A combined team of SACYR Water, REDstack BV and Pure Water Group successfully commissioned the installation, enabling the production of its first kilowatts of Blue Energy!

Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) is a promising technology to generate electrical energy from salt gradients. The Blue Energy generated in this process is a fully renewable and sustainable, CO2-free energy source that can contribute to the EU’s climate goals. The technology concept that will be demonstrated within the Life HyReward Project uses the RED technology to harvest the energy available in the salinity gradient between seawater RO reject water and treated wastewater from a wastewater treatment plant.

The operation in Alicante is just the first experimental phase of this project. In the Alicante desalination plant, Blue Energy production is tested using seawater RO reject water from the desalination plant and the product water. The second phase will be carried out in Mallorca, where the real conditions object of the project will be tested. That is producing Blue Energy from the salinity gradient between seawater RO reject water and treated wastewater.

The project, led by Sacyr Water, is being co-developed by a multidisciplinary consortium consisting of Dutch sister companies REDstack and Pure Water Group.

The Pure Water Group brings together over 25 years of applied knowledge and all-round experience with advanced and sustainable electrochemical separation solutions for pure and clean water production. The latest enhanced performance of the Evoqua modules continue the Pure Water Group tradition to pursue improvements and retain leadership in water purification technology.
